Product Description
This book explores the contemporary art of India in a volume as colorful, vibrant, and diverse as the country itself.

Chalo means 'Let's go!' in Hindi and the enthusiasm of that expression is evident throughout the pages of this catalogue for an exhibition at the Essl Museum in Austria. Encompassing a broad range of media, including painting, sculpture, photography, and installation, the book features more than one hundred works by artists and collectives from all over India. Themes of identity, urbanization, spirituality, and politics reflect the country's recent transformation into a global power. Accompanying the reproductions are essays that explore the impact of the economic and cultural revolution on India and focus on the modern art of specific geographic regions throughout the country. Looking beyond the popular Bollywood-influenced images of twenty-first-century India, this important volume reveals the complex artistic practices taking place throughout the country.

Product Description
Commissions for buildings and works of art from public authorities or private clients are an important means of promoting art in public areas, and they offer artists the opportunity of realising projects in an architectural space outside that of the museum. For the architects these artists often provide the first interpretation of the emerging architecture with its spatial functions, and in this way they generate so-called "hybrid zones" because the architectural function can also be perceived as a work of art in the context of public art. This book presents in text and image some 20 interventions and projects in Basel and Zurich, created from the 1990s to the present day. Cross references to other European cities help to provide an overview of the international debate, and it initiates a controversial discussion on the present and future possibilities for art and building through statements and text contributions. These are provided by architects including Diener & Diener, Herzog & de Meuron, Peter Markli, Morger & Degelo, artists such as Renee Levi, Jean Pfaff, Remy Zaugg, art historians and other experts in relevant fields. In autumn 2003 there will be an exhibition in Basel and Zurich devoted to this topic.

Product Description

In 1994, an interim government in Rwanda orchestrated one of the world's worst mass crimes: a 100-day extermination campaign that took half a million lives. At the time, Rwanda's genocide went largely unnoticed by the outside world. Today there is growing interest in the Rwandan experience as many discover the horror that took place and seek to understand how and why violence of this character and magnitude could have happened in our time.Intimate Enemy is a rare entrée into the logic, language, and imagery of Rwanda's violence. The book presents perpetrator testimony along with photographs of Rwandans, both perpetrators and survivors. The images and words are raw and unanalyzed; the reader is left to make sense of the killers and their would-be victims. Intimate Enemy challenges our assumptions about the genocide and about those who perpetrated it. It also prods us to consider how to represent and imagine violence on the scale of Rwanda's.

Product Description

The Hoerengracht (1983–88) is an installation artwork by Ed Kienholz (American, 1927–1994) and his wife, Nancy Reddin Kienholz. This tableau––a surprising site in the National Gallery––is a walk-through evocation of Amsterdam’s red-light district, with glowing windows and claustrophobic streets. With its statements on morality, vanitas, and composition of secret spaces and receding views, The Hoerengracht resonates powerfully with paintings by Dutch masters of the 17th century. The work was the last major piece made by the Kienholzes before Ed died and remains a major reference point for contemporary artists including Mike Kelley, Paul McCarthy, Mike Nelson, and Damien Hirst.

This striking exhibition catalogue positions The Hoerengracht and Kienholz in a new perspective.

Product Description
Deceptive in the ease of their creation, diminutive size, and sheer abundance, snapshots are often thought of as the mostinnocent type of photography. But snapshots are complex and willful picturespremeditated, fussed over, and oftenpredetermined. The postures we adopt, the gestures we pantomime, the exaggerated facial expressions we compose and try to hold for a split second are all meant to express the emotional weight of a certain moment. In a time when digital cameras make photography all too easy, it is fascinating to look back on a day when image making was more deliberate.

Now Is Then features images from the 1920s through the 1960s, the golden age of snapshot photography. The photosquirky, elegant, heartbreaking, and heart-warmingboth celebrate and question the conventions of snapshot photography. Texts by well-known visual culture critics offer fresh perspectives on the snapshots and their power over us. Unlike previous explorations of vernacular photography, Now Is Then takes a step forward to look at the broader cultural impact of snapshotswhy we make them, how we use them, why they become relics, and, most importantly, what they reveal about us.
